Ambient storage and distribution in Northern Ireland

White’s oat mill is located between the rolling hills of Tandragee, County Armagh in Northern Ireland. White’s has been milling oats for over 170 years and is Northern Ireland’s only oat mill and breakfast producer. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fane Valley Co-op Society.

• 300-400 pallets of packaging stored before being called-off
• 2-3 vehicles daily collecting palletised boxed product
• 100 pallet positions of boxed ambient products
Despite making additions to their product range, they have stayed true to their original values. And by working closely with local farmers, White’s has been able to produce the finest quality oats and the best possible porridge products.

In the production of finest quality oat products, White’s needed a secure, ambient storage facility within a BRC accredited warehouse, in which to house both packaging and finished goods. And as a key part of their supply chain, they also had to find a transportation solution to provide: direct haulage to their customers (cereal producers), movement of packaging materials from storage to the Tandragee mill and deliveries direct to retailers of the boxed cereal brands.

With an accredited warehouse at Ballyclare for product storage, the Woodside Group is one of the few Northern Ireland based transport groups to have a BRC, Global Standard for Storage and Distribution, accreditation. Thereby having the capability to manage White’s supply chain both in and out of the Tandragee mill, the partnership between the two companies seemed a logical choice.

With over 40 years of haulage experience, the Woodside Group manages the daily collection from White’s Tandragee oat mill in County Armagh. The palletised freight, consisting of large 25kg tote boxed or bagged oats are delivered directly to the producers of muesli, oat cereals and other cereal based products.
Packaging materials are stored at the Woodside Group’s secure 80,000 sq ft Ballyclare warehouse, providing White’s various packaging suppliers with the facility to deliver packaging direct to the warehouse - on occasion the Woodside Group will also arrange for the collection of packaging materials from White’s suppliers. With packaging occupying 300-400 pallet positions, packaging product is then called-off from the Tandragee mill according to processing requirements. Delivery of packaging stock into the Tandragee mill is made the next day in pallet or part pallet quantities.

Producing a range of boxed product (finished goods) daily, the oat mill relies heavily on the efficiency of the logistics operation to support other routes to market. Routinely 2-3 vehicles daily will collect palletised boxed product from the mill to be stored within the BRC accredited warehouse at Ballyclare. This ambient facility has transformed the Woodside Group’s logistical capability and has enhanced the service offering to White’s, thereby enabling the product to be stored in the required perfect conditions. At any one time around 1,000 pallet positions are allocated to palletised boxed product. The product is then called-off as per White’s sales ordering process, picked and packed by fully trained staff and delivered on day three from point of order, to a range of both large and small retailer customers throughout Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the UK.The Woodside Group maintains an average delivery KPI performance of 99.5%.

James Mathers, White’s General Manager said: "Very few companies in Northern Ireland have a BRC accredited warehousing facility that is so important to White’s oat products. Since our partnership with the Woodside Group, both parties have worked hard to build a supply chain operation that works efficiently and runs exceptionally smoothly.”
