All 91,000 staff are partners who own 41 John Lewis shops across the UK (31 department stores and 10 John Lewis at home), Waitrose supermarkets (www.waitrose.com), an online and catalogue business, (www.johnlewis.com), a production unit and a farm. The business has annual gross sales of over £10bn and partners share in the profits.
John Lewis has seen rapid growth in its Click & Collect service, where shoppers can order online at www.johnlewis.com for free delivery to their local John Lewis shop or one of 309 Waitrose branches. Orders placed before 7pm may be collected from 2pm the following day.
THE CUSTOMER
John Lewis – Multichannel Retailer of the Year 2014 and The Nation's Best Retailer – typically stocks more than 350,000 lines in its stores across fashion, home and technology, while Johnlewis.com stocks over 250,000 products.  In 2008 Knights of Old carried out occasional distribution services for John Lewis, but it wasn’t until shovels hit the ground at their new £97m, 650,000 sq ft Magna Park Distribution Centre, near Milton Keynes, that Knights of Old began to play more of a role in the John Lewis distribution network.
THE REQUIREMENT
With the John Lewis online business worth £1bn a year, Knights of Old cemented their position as a supply chain partner by providing a stock consolidation service from their base in Kettering, Northants. The operation is based on collecting loads of small ‘binable’ tote box products such as electronics and kitchenware from John Lewis  suppliers and storing the stock for a short period, before being ‘called-off’ by John Lewis for delivery to Magna Park.
TEH SOLUTION
The consolidation process, which involves up to 87,500 items of stock, provides a controlled solution to enable goods to enter the John Lewis supply chain, as opposed to hundreds of suppliers arriving at Magna Park over a 2-3 day period to deliver their stock. Knights of Old are fulfilling an expanding role that was previously a John Lewis transport fleet commitment, but due to ongoing expansion is no longer cost effective.
John Lewis required a partner that represented the right standard for their brand. As there is usually a large amount of John Lewis stock held in Knights of Old’s warehousing for short periods, trust has played an important factor in the  development of the relationship.
In 2013/14, Knights of Old made 780 collections from 64 John Lewis suppliers. These collections were consolidated into 221 inbound distribution centre loads, saving 559 inbound deliveries.
