Mole Valley Farmers is an  agricultural supply business,  based in the south west of England, and is owned by over 7,000 farmer shareholders. As the UK’s largest rural retailer, Mole Valley Farmers is focussed on adding increased value for farming and rural communities through its extensive network.
With a rapidly expanding business, they needed to find a logistics partner who could match their growth aspirations – they looked no further than Kettering-based Knights of Old. The partnership is now in its fourth year.
THE CUSTOMER
With nine ‘branches’ in the south-west,  Mole Valley Farmers is a one-stop shop for the rural community. Goods range from farm requirements to clothing, footwear and  pet food. Mole Valley Farmers also have 19 retail units operated under the SCATS Countrystores banner.
Mole Valley Farmers’ agricultural manufacturing business also produce and supply animal feeds and fertilisers under the Mole Valley Feed Solutions and Three Counties Feeds brands.
THE REQUIREMENT
The main area of focus for Knights of Old was the distribution of retail goods from the Mole Valley Farmers’ Central Distribution Centre (CDC) in Lincolnshire. The operation required Knights of Old to distribute centrally secured products to retail outlets in the south west and the SCATS network of stores in the South East. This has now  expanded to cover the East Midlands, East Anglia and the North East.
With Knights of Old vehicles returning to their warehousing facility empty on the return leg, Mole Valley Farmers and Knights of Old considered backload opportunities countrywide.
THE SOLUTION
With a team of dedicated and often dual branded vehicles, Knights of Old’s main service commitment commences with an average of eight collections, equating to around 200 pallets daily.
Deliveries are made to Mole Valley Farmers’ south west retail outlets during two-day milk rounds.  Once deliveries are complete, Knights of Old vehicles are backloaded with animal feed products from Mole Valley Farmers’ mills and  distributed to retail outlets countrywide.
The backload operation has been extended to include key suppliers, which allows Knights of Old to collect product and deliver direct into the company’s CDCs. At any one time, up to 25 Knights of Old vehicles operate within the Mole Valley Farmers’ distribution network.
The Knights of Old storage facilities are used by Mole Valley Farmers to store up  to 2,500 pallets at peak, comprising largely seasonal items such as crop packaging products. Knights of Old also offers added-value services such as emergency small pallet delivery, additional collections on 24/48 hours notice and rigid vehicles to deliver direct to customers.
VOICE OF THE CUSTOMER
Andrew Chapple, Mole Valley Farmers’ Group Company Secretary/Head of Finance, said: "It’s a win-win situation. Knights of Old have grown with us and  are totally professional in supporting our goals and objectives.”
